Porsche 991.2 Steering Wheel Multifunction Buttons Retrofit Guide – Everything You Need to Know

One of the most common questions we receive is:

"Can I add multifunction steering wheel buttons to my Porsche 991.2 steering wheel that originally didn't have them?"

The answer is yes—but contrary to what many people believe, installing only the steering wheel buttons is not enough.

Every week we receive emails from customers who have purchased only the buttons and wonder why they don't work. The multifunction system consists of several OEM components that all work together.

This guide explains exactly what parts are required, when you need them, and the most common mistakes to avoid.

Can You Retrofit Multifunction Buttons?

Yes.

If you have an original Porsche 991.2 steering wheel without multifunction buttons, you can retrofit the complete OEM multifunction system.

The retrofit is straightforward provided you use all of the correct components.

Parts Required

Depending on your steering wheel configuration, you will need the following OEM parts:

  • Multifunction steering wheel buttons;
  • Matching steering wheel control module;
  • Rear steering wheel button trims;
  • Steering wheel wiring harness (only required if your steering wheel does not already have the Sport Chrono controller);
  • Vehicle coding after installation.

Let's look at each component in detail.

1. Multifunction Steering Wheel Buttons & Control Module

This is the heart of the retrofit.

The steering wheel buttons communicate through a dedicated steering wheel control module. The module and buttons must always be compatible with each other.

Important:

The control module must come from the same steering wheel version as the buttons.

Mixing different button versions and modules can result in non-functioning buttons or communication issues.

Standard Porsche Steering Wheel (375 mm)

Compatible button part numbers:

  • 95B959537;
  • 95B959538.

2. Rear Steering Wheel Button Trims

This is another component that is often overlooked.

A steering wheel originally manufactured without multifunction buttons uses different rear trim pieces.

These trims provide the correct mounting points for the multifunction buttons.

Required part numbers:

  • 95B419937E;
  • 95B419936E.

3. Steering Wheel Wiring Harness

Whether you need a new steering wheel wiring harness depends on your current steering wheel configuration.

Steering Wheel WITHOUT Sport Chrono Controller

If your steering wheel was originally equipped without the Sport Chrono controller, you will need the multifunction steering wheel wiring harness.

Steering Wheel WITH Sport Chrono Controller

If your steering wheel already has the factory Sport Chrono controller (rotary drive mode selector), you do not need a new steering wheel wiring harness.

The factory harness already includes the required connector for the steering wheel control module, so it can simply be reused.

This is one of the most common questions we receive, and fortunately, it saves both time and money for owners upgrading these steering wheels.

Installation Overview:

Once you have all of the required OEM parts, the retrofit generally consists of:

  1. Removing the airbag.
  2. Removing the existing rear steering wheel trims.
  3. Installing the multifunction buttons.
  4. Installing the correct steering wheel control module.
  5. Installing the steering wheel wiring harness (if required).
  6. Reinstalling the rear steering wheel trims.
  7. Reassembling the steering wheel.
  8. Coding the vehicle.

Coding Is Required:

Installing the hardware alone will not activate the multifunction buttons.

After installation, the vehicle must be coded using PIWIS or another compatible Porsche diagnostic system.

The exact coding procedure depends on the vehicle configuration.

Please note that MIGMANN supplies OEM retrofit parts only and does not provide coding or programming services.

Most Common Retrofit Mistakes:

Buying Only the Buttons

This is by far the most common mistake.

The buttons cannot operate by themselves.

They require:

  • Compatible steering wheel module
  • Correct rear trims
  • Correct wiring
  • Vehicle coding

Using an Incorrect Steering Wheel Module

The steering wheel module must match the multifunction button version.

Installing an incompatible module can prevent the buttons from communicating correctly.

Forgetting the Rear Trims

Many owners don't realize that steering wheels without multifunction buttons use different rear trim pieces.

Without the correct trims, the buttons cannot be mounted properly.

Buying a Wiring Harness When It Isn't Needed

If your steering wheel already has the factory Sport Chrono controller, you can reuse the original steering wheel harness.

A replacement harness is only required on steering wheels that originally lacked the Sport Chrono controller.

Skipping Vehicle Coding

Even with every hardware component installed correctly, the multifunction buttons will not work until the vehicle has been coded.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I install only the multifunction buttons?

No.

The buttons require the matching steering wheel control module, rear trims, and vehicle coding.

Depending on your steering wheel, a wiring harness may also be required.

How do I know which control module I need?

It depends on whether your steering wheel has the factory Sport Chrono controller.

  • Without Sport Chrono controller: 95B959256E;
  • With Sport Chrono controller: 95B959256F.

Do I always need the steering wheel wiring harness?

No.

You only need a new wiring harness if your steering wheel originally did not have the Sport Chrono controller.

If your steering wheel already has the factory Sport Chrono controller, you can reuse the existing harness.

Are these genuine Porsche parts?

Yes.

All retrofit components supplied by MIGMANN are genuine OEM Porsche parts.

Can this retrofit be done on any Porsche 991.2 steering wheel?

As long as you have an original Porsche 991.2 steering wheel, the retrofit is possible using the correct OEM components.

Vehicle compatibility and coding requirements may vary depending on factory equipment.
